As a travel writer/photographer, Don has written a number of travel articles about both U.S. and European destinations.

He writes for European Traveler magazine, Leisure Group Travel magazine for 20,000 travel agents, German Life magazine (50,000 circulation), has been published in Chicago Tribune TribLocal, USA Today, Gemutlichkeit Travel Letter, Creators News Syndicate (story goes to 50-75 major newspapers/publications), Journal-Topic Newspapers (225,000 circulation - Chicago/17 newspaper syndicate), Northwest Indiana Times (90,000 circulation), Travelife magazine, Trains magazine (100,000 circulation), Railfan & Railroad magazine (60,000 circulation), Model Railroad Craftsman (40,000 circulation), Christianity Today (130,000 circulation) and his own publications, and takes photos of people, historical places and attractions, festivals and foods. He also has written a twice-monthly column for TrainLife.com about the world of trains. He earned a degree in journalism from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois, and has written 12 books.

He is a writer, editor, publisher and photographer and has owned his own publications and worked for both newspapers as a reporter (reporter for the Champaign-Urbana, Illinois News Gazette and Louisville-Courier Journal; owner-publisher of The County Star newspaper in Central Illinois) and staff writer for magazines (McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. New York City), and worked in corporate public relations in Chicago for 10 years, seven years of which were for the Illinois Central Railroad where he was the railroad's Press Representative. He was also the editor of the U.S. Army newspaper at Fort Knox, Kentucky while in the U.S. Army.

Don hosted his own radio show for two years on WPGU Radio in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois where his primary audience was the 30,000 students at the University of Illinois, and he was also a guest on PBS' Tracks Ahead television series on two separate occasions. In April of 2012 he was interviewed by Croatian Television as a travel writer touring the country.
